Tattoo aftercare
Fine line work needs a little extra love while it heals. Follow these steps to keep your tattoo crisp, bright and healthy.
01 First few hours
- ✦ Leave the wrap or film on for as long as I advise (usually 2–4 hours for cling film, or 3–5 days for a second-skin film).
- ✦ Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
- ✦ Remove the wrap gently. If it sticks, wet it with lukewarm water first.
02 Days 1–14: cleaning
- ✦ Wash 2–3 times a day with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, using clean hands only.
- ✦ Pat dry with clean kitchen roll. Don't rub, and don't use a shared towel.
- ✦ Apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free aftercare balm or moisturiser. Less is more; let it breathe.
03 Weeks 2–4: healing
- ✦ Flaking, peeling and itching are normal. Don't pick, scratch or peel. Gently tap it instead.
- ✦ Keep moisturising lightly while it looks dry or shiny.
- ✦ It can take 4–6 weeks to fully heal underneath, even once the top looks healed.
Avoid while healing
- ✕ Swimming pools, the sea, hot tubs, saunas and long baths for at least 2 weeks. Quick showers are fine.
- ✕ Sunbeds and direct sun while it heals. Afterwards, use SPF 50 to keep your lines crisp.
- ✕ Tight or rough clothing rubbing on the area.
- ✕ Heavy gym sessions that stretch or sweat on the area for the first few days.
- ✕ Thick layers of petroleum jelly, or perfumed lotions.
- ✕ Letting pets or anyone else touch it.
When to get help
Contact your GP or call NHS 111 if you notice:
- ! Redness or swelling that spreads or gets worse after day 3
- ! The area feels hot, very painful, or oozes yellow/green pus
- ! A fever or feeling generally unwell
